Creating the right environment to tell the kids about divorce

Creating the right environment to tell the kids about divorce

When you’re talking to the children about an upcoming divorce, it’s important to find the right environment or atmosphere for that conversation. If you choose the wrong time, it may go a lot worse than it would otherwise.

So how do you help things go smoothly for your kids? Here are a few tips to create the optimal environment to address these significant changes in your lives.

Make it a family meeting

First of all, you want your entire family to be present for this conversation. You and your spouse should be there to tell the kids together and answer their questions. If you have multiple children, they should all learn about the divorce at the same time.

Avoid time constraints

Next, don’t have this conversation if you have any upcoming deadlines or time constraints. Don’t bring it up when you have to leave for work in half an hour or when the kids are about to go to school, for example. Be sure that you have unlimited free time to talk about this for as long as the children need.

Avoid external stress

Finally, consider any external stressors your children have. Try to find the right time to bring the subject up. If your child has a big exam on Friday, graduation, or an important extracurricular activity, it may be wise to let that pass before telling them about the divorce.

Addressing child custody

If you’re considering how to tell the children about divorce, you clearly want to put their best interests first. Make sure you know about all the legal options you have to keep this focus while creating a child custody arrangement.
